PROFILE

Rob, a central Mainer at heart, is a Member of the firm’s alternative dispute resolution, trials and litigation, medical malpractice, and professional liability practice groups. Although his focus is on ADR and civil litigation, Rob’s broad practice includes the defense of a wide range of licensed professionals in malpractice claims, insurance litigation and coverage law, defense of individuals before professional licensing and disciplinary boards, and product defect litigation. Prior to merging with NHD, Rob served as the Managing Partner for Thompson Bowie & Hatch LLC, a Maine insurance defense firm originally founded in 1978. Rob currently serves on the Management Committee at NHD.

In addition to his litigation caseload, attorneys from all over the Northeast retain Rob to assist them with the resolution of their own civil cases. The matters in which Rob has been retained as a neutral cover the entire spectrum of civil litigation; professional liability, personal injury, premises liability, catastrophic loss, business dissolution, partnership disputes, employment litigation, real estate and land use contests, probate and estate disputes, and pretty much everything else in between.  On average, attorneys specially retain Rob to mediate, arbitrate, or serve as a hearing officer more than 210 times per year.

Rob has been elected to the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals, selected as a New England SuperLawyer for more than 15 years, named for inclusion in the Best Lawyers in America in at least 6 different categories, and awarded Best’s Lawyer of the Year on multiple occasions in both Professional Liability Defense and Arbitration.

Rob earned a BA in Government and English from Hamilton College. He also studied International Law and British Foreign Policy at Oxford University, and the American Political Process at Georgetown University. While attending Georgetown, Rob worked as an intern for former U.S. Senator Olympia Snowe. Rob earned his JD from the University of Maine School of Law and, during law school, Rob served as both a production editor for the Maine Law Review and was the recipient of the MSBA’s Pro Bono Student Award. Upon graduation, Rob completed a judicial clerkship with the Honorable Donald G. Alexander, Associate Justice of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court.

Rob is a former high school football coach, and when not in the office, you will find him somewhere outdoors golfing, hunting, fly fishing, or watching his daughters play sports. Rob also engages in a variety of community and charitable events throughout the year.
