PROFILE

Jim’s practice focuses on professional liability matters, primarily focused on the representation of lawyers, as well as insurance counseling services and commercial litigation. His reputation in the legal community is built, in part, on his successful involvement in cases which have helped shape Maine law. Not only is he a veteran of countless jury trials in both state and federal court, as well as non-jury trials, arbitrations, mediations, and administrative hearings, he has also been counsel of record in over 100 matters before the Maine Supreme Judicial Court.

Jim is an active arbitrator and mediator.  He is also a frequent lecturer on subjects of professional responsibility, legal ethics, alternative dispute resolution, and risk management for professionals.

Jim’s passion is baseball, appropriately enough, as a now-retired umpire. He’s a past president of the Western Maine Board of Baseball Umpires and is a former executive secretary of the State of Maine Umpires Association. Jim has also served on a variety of civic and educational boards and organizations in the Greater Portland and Southern Maine area, including serving as the campaign co-chair for the Foundations for the Future of Campaign at the University of Maine School of Law and chair of the Campaign for Justice.  He has previously served as a member of the Maine Board of Overseers of the Bar’s Professional Ethics Commission.

Jim resides in Yarmouth with his wife Sarah.  He spends his spare time enjoying the Maine coast and his family’s lake house in Central New Hampshire, as well as spending time with his extraordinarily handsome brand-new grandson.
